Apache web server

A web server delivers web content to users (usually on their web browsers). Apache is a popular, feature-rich, and stable web server, predominantly run on Linux computers, that Hosting Australia uses for almost all of its hosting packages.

auDA .au Domain Administration - the auDA is the regulatory body for the .au TLD, they manage the .au domain name policies and provide licenses to domain registries
Auto Responder

As its name implies, an auto responder automatically sends an e-mail response to the message sender. One of the most common and well-known examples of an auto responder is the “Out of Office” message reply.  Similarly, you could configure your web site to automatically respond to e-mails sent to a particular address, such as info@example.com. Backup

A backup is a copy of files or data. In the event of data loss or corruption, you can use a backup to restore data. For more information about backing up data, please see these articles.

Bandwidth The amount of incoming traffic your site is allowed to receive per month, also includes the sending and receiving of emails on your accounts.
Browser
A browser (or “web browser”) is a client application that parses HTML from a web server and displays it as a human-readable page. Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Apple Safari are all commonly used web browsers.
   
CMS Content Management System - Software such as Wordpress and Joomla are CMS platforms. They help to organise website content and to streamline your development process by taking out a lot of the hard work of building a website.
CPU Central Processing Unit - A key component and the brain of any computer.
Cron A cron is an automated task to run scheduled programs within computer operating systems
   
Dedicated IP An IP address that is used solely by your website.  A standard hosting package comes with a shared IP we assign you
   
Dedicated Server A dedicated server is a separate physical server that hosts a single account. A dedicated server gives you complete control over the operating system, resource usage, and more. Because the server only hosts one dedicated account (as opposed to a shared hosting server, which hosts many accounts), web site performance is usually significantly faster. Dedicated servers are intended for customers who need a server with high availability and performance.
   
DNS DNS (Domain Name System) is the service that translates human-readable domain names (such as example.com) into numerical IP addresses that computers can understand (such as 192.168.216.119). When you buy a domain name, either you or the hosting company creates a DNS record that associates the domain name with a numerical IP address.
   
Domain Name A domain name is a unique, human-readable identifier for a site, such as example.com or hosting-australia.com. The domain name actually represents a numerical string (the IP address) that instructs a client where to access the actual server. Email Client Program used to download and view your emails.  Examples : MS Outlook, Mac Mail, Thunderbird
   
FTP FTP is a service for transferring files over the internet. By using an FTP client application such as FileZilla, you can upload (send) and download (receive) files from a remote server
   
HA
Sometimes used as shorthand for Hosting Australia
   
Horde An email application that can be used via the Webmail interface.
   
.htaccess Allows you to set parameters on specific files. It is most often used for permissions to determine what access is allowed to a particular file
   
HDD Space Hard Disk Drive Space - The amount of storage you are allocated on your hosting package
   
Hosted Exchange A powerful email service, that includes shared features, dedicated mobile apps and an advanced webmail interface. See here for more info.
   
IMAP Internet Message Access Protocol - a form of mail protocol, used to retrieve emails stored on a hosting server. Ideal for sharing accounts across devices.
   
Internet Browser Also known as Browser or Web Browser. Enables you to view web pages online.  Examples include: Internet Explorer or Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, Opera.
   
IP Address An IP address is a unique number (for example, 93.184.216.119) assigned to a device on a network. A domain name is a human-readable label (such as example.com) that points to the actual numeric IP address that computers can understand. Sometimes your IP may be blocked on a server due to login errors.   To find your internet IP you can use https://whatsmyip.org.
   
Joomla A popular CMS or web building platform. Has dropped off the radar in recent years due to issues with security and poorly policed policies.
   
Mailing List A mailing list enables you to send an e-mail message to multiple recipients at once. Mailing lists are commonly used to send announcements or to hold online discussions..
   
Managed Hosting Managed hosting is a type of web hosting where the provider, such as Hosting Australia, handles configuration changes, software upgrades, and other system administration tasks for the server. Shared hosting, reseller hosting, and managed VPS accounts are all managed packages. Managed hosting packages at Hosting Australia include cPanel access.
   
MySQL A database system that is often included in hosting packages. It is commonly used with a variety of applications
   
Parked Domain A separate domain that points to your existing account. Often people purchase the .com and .net versions of their domain. If you search either one the same information will be displayed
   
PHP PHP is a free and open source scripting language that enables you to generate dynamic content by embedding code directly into the HTML of a web page. All Hosting Australia packages include PHP. Plugin Plugins are used on CMS platforms such as WordPress, to perform certain tasks or add features. For example, Woo Commerce is a plugin used to add a shopping cart facility to your website.
   
POP Post Office Protocol - a form of mail protocol, which downloads mail from a hosting server to a local device.
   
Registrar Organisation or company that manages and handles the reservation of domain names.
   
Reseller Hosting On a reseller hosting package, the account owner hosts websites for other users. Roundcube An email application that can be used via the Webmail interface
   
SSH Secure Socket Shell - A network protocol that assists in safely accessing a system/computer while using an insecure connection.
   
SSL Secure Socket Layer - A form of encryption, used to secure data from your website to the site visitors browser/device.
   
TLD Top Level Domain - An upper tiered domain within the domain hierarchy such as .com .org or .au
   
Webmail A method of accessing - reading, replying and managing - your emails via a website, from any location with internet access.
   
WordPress The worlds most popular CMS (Content Management System), or web building platform. Loaded with plugins, themes and busy support forums.
