The Importance of a GOOD Password! Print

  • 2

Why do I need a 'STRONG' password? All I have is a small email account that I use occasionally.

The fact is, it doesn't matter if you have a large website or a single email account  the 'strength' and security of your passwords is of paramount importance.

A single email account and password in the hands of a 'spammer' is enough to bring a mail server to its knees, with literally thousands of emails sent via a single compromised account. That spam overloads servers and fills your mailbox with junk mail!

...and that's the least that can happen. Identity theft is a growing problem worldwide. With everyone being targeted, you need to keep your online identity and information secure.

Follow these basic rules:

  • Never use a predictable name/username as your password
  • Do not use pet names or kids' names
  • Passwords should be at least 7 letters/numbers/symbols in length (and a mix of these)
  • You should change your password regularly
  • Never reuse an old password
  • Never write it down or share it with anyone
You should also regularly check your computer for spyware, as most email accounts are compromised by spyware, or by people typing their passwords into an infected home computer.
